Have You Ever Second-Guessed What You Heard from the Lord? You’re Not Alone
If you’ve ever second-guessed what you heard from the Lord, know that you’re not alone. As children of God, we often face spiritual attacks. In John 10:10, we are reminded that the devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy. The attacks we face often involve the enemy trying to steal the word of God from our hearts. The enemy casts doubt and anxiety to steal our faith. Often, we create our own timelines for God’s promises to manifest, forgetting that God’s timing is not our own. Ecclesiastes 3:11
Allowing the Lord to complete His work in us is vital. If we stop Him too soon, we won’t receive the fullness of His blessings. The Lord often acts like a master builder in our lives. Sometimes, He has to completely destroy the faulty foundations on which our beliefs and lives are built, and other times, He is carrying out renovations, making necessary adjustments to strengthen us. Regardless of whether it’s a complete teardown or a renovation, the process can be difficult and uncomfortable. But just like a skilled builder, God knows what He’s doing, and His work is always for our good.
When God begins this work, it might feel like everything is falling apart, like we have no control of what is going on, but if we believe who he says he is, we must trust him. trust that he is building something better, something stronger, and more aligned with His perfect plan for us. Waiting on Him during this process is key, just as construction takes time and patience, so does the work God is doing in our hearts and lives.
I encourage you to wait on Him, knowing that He is faithful to complete the good work He has started in you (Philippians 1:6).
The enemy seeks to kill our joy. Nehemiah 8:10 tells us that the joy of the Lord is our strength. When we have joy in the Lord, we understand our strength comes from Him, enabling us to resist the enemy’s attacks. But when doubt creeps in, fear and worry follow. Fear builds up when we feel God didn’t meet the timeline we imagined, and we fail to recognize that God’s timing is perfect. Without resting in His victory, we become blind to the fact that we’ve been saved by His grace.
How Doubt and Bitterness Destroy Our Relationship with God
Once joy is stolen, we become moody and begin to question God’s faithfulness. This opens the door to anger, bitterness, and unfaithfulness toward the Lord. We might find ourselves thinking things like, “I waited, but God didn’t come through for me,” or “Maybe God doesn’t care enough about me.” These thoughts, rooted in deception, give the enemy more grounds to attack us further. Spiritual strongholds can form around our hearts as a result and these act as shackles God never intended for us.
My dear brother or sister, I know you may be going through difficult challenges, but I want to encourage you to wait on the Lord. He is never late; He is always on time. Even though you think you are alone, you aren’t, the Lord who sits in the midst of the Cherubim is there with you in that season. There’s a secret that he is close to the broken hearted, hold on to that word.
Many of the heroes of faith we admire in scripture also faced delays and challenges—but they waited on God.
- Abraham and Sarah waited decades for their promised son (Genesis 17).
- Zachariah and Elizabeth waited years before having their child (Luke 1).
- David waited 15 years after being anointed by Samuel before becoming king (1 Samuel 16).
God may give us a promise or vision, but that doesn’t mean it will manifest immediately. Often, it marks the beginning of a waiting period. Whether you are waiting for a new season, job, spouse, or child, I urge you to trust the Lord and wait patiently. Isaiah 40:31 encourages us that those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. In moments of depletion, cry out to Him, and He will renew you.
What Happens During the Waiting Season?
In the waiting season, God is preparing us for His blessing. He is purifying and refining us so that when the blessing comes, we will fully recognize His power and sovereignty. He makes us more like Him, and if we wait faithfully, we will receive the crown He has prepared specifically for us.
My Source of Income Was Taken Away, I Lost Cherished Friendships, and My Confidence Was Shattered—But God Remained Faithful
In my case, my source of income was gone, I lost cherished friendships through separation, and to make matters worse, I gained more weight than I ever thought possible. I ballooned to 110kg—something that shattered my confidence. As if that wasn’t enough, I faced severe financial challenges. After applying to thousands of jobs, I kept receiving the same rejection emails, which left me deeply discouraged. I started questioning my capabilities and almost started wondering if it was worth it. Eventually, some light seemed to have shun my way, I had received a job offer, and was faced with the challenge of telling a lie to keep the job or telling the truth which would risk me losing that job, so I did what I believed was the right thing to do- I told the truth and lost my job- going back to the state i was in prior. I finally got an interview and got to the final stage, only to be rejected again!
Thankfully, during this challenging time, the Lord sent people into my life who became sources of encouragement. But despite their support, I didn’t always recognize it for what it was. Many times, I still felt isolated, alone, and neglected. These feelings were like fertile ground for the enemy, giving him the perfect opportunity to deepen his deception and sow seeds of falsehood in my heart.
The Relentless Love of God
Despite the constant attacks on my mind and spirit, the love of God remained relentless throughout that season. He continued to show me visions of hope, encouraged me with His Word, and tried to comfort me. But the battle in my mind was intense. In any spiritual battle, the spirit you choose to believe determines the outcome. The Lord, in His kindness, kept reminding me of His promises, while the enemy kept trying to sow weeds of doubt and despair.
My emotions were all over the place. I could be smiling one moment, but deep inside, I’d be thinking about how much I had regressed. The devil kept lying to me, convincing me that I was completely alone. But the Lord, through the people He had placed in my life, reminded me that I wasn’t.
I understand the temptation to want to isolate yourself during such times, to retreat into solitude. But reaching out to a trusted family member or friend to confide in can make all the difference. If you don’t feel you have someone to talk to, consider speaking with a therapist or, most importantly, talking to Jesus. He is the ultimate burden-bearer. As Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
A Spiritual Battle Like No Other
Throughout this period, I consistently questioned the goodness of God, and I found myself constantly repenting. The spiritual battle was fierce—some days were filled with faith and courage, while others were plagued with doubt and despair. I had to make a choice about whom I would believe. Would I trust the enemy, who is known as the father of lies? Or would I believe the Lord, who is the Spirit of Truth?
The waiting season is never easy, but you learn so much about God—and yourself—during it. As someone still in that waiting season, I’ve entered a new chapter where my trust is fully in the Lord. My mind, soul, and body respond differently now because I’ve accepted the truth that God is good, merciful, and kind. His words will never return void (Isaiah 55:11).
Embracing the Waiting Season
No one enjoys waiting, but it can be a season filled with growth and even excitement, depending on your perspective. If you’re waiting for a spouse, don’t neglect yourself in the process. Take care of your health—eat well, exercise, and engage in activities that bring you joy and glorify God. Talk to someone about your struggles, encourage others who are in the same season, and find things that uplift your spirit.
I’ve since started shedding the extra weight, both physically and spiritually. I’ve regained my confidence and now enjoy spending quality time with my family. One of my greatest joys is talking about my favorite subject—Jesus—and encouraging others who are walking through a similar season. Remember that you are beautiful, Jesus believes that you are worth dying for and when the devil comes in with his lies, fight him with scripture- for the Lord is good and he will never leave nor forsake you
Conclusion: Wait on the Lord

He is faithful, and He will walk with you through every step of the journey. Don’t lose heart, and don’t give up. Keep trusting in the Lord, for He is never late. As I’ve learned, the season of waiting is not wasted—it’s a time when God is working on you, preparing you for something greater.
So again, I say, wait on the Lord. He is faithful, and His timing is perfect.
